I've been wanting to add feathers to a knit piece for a really long time! So I finally bought some at the craft store the other day, and this is what I made from them (and you can too!)
You will need:
- About 1/4 of a skein of worsted weight yarn (I'm using Lion Brand Wool Ease Worsted in Oxford Gray)
-A feather piece (I bought all the feathers attached to fabric already for a couple dollars, but if there is not a finished piece you like you can make one yourself by cutting a tear drop shaped piece of stiff fabric and using a small amount of hot glue to attach some feathers).
- Crochet hook that goes with your yarn's gauge (I'm using a J) and a tapestry needle.
- Needle and thread
Chain 22.
Base Row: 1 Dc in third ch from hook and in each ch across. 20 Dc total.
Row 1: Ch 2. FPDC around first two Dc stitches. BPDC around the next two. Repeat this pattern across.
Row 2: As Row 1.
Continue in this pattern until the crochet piece is long enough to fit around your head.
Attach the beginning and ending rows with a sl st seem. Cut and bind off leaving a very long tail - a couple feet long.
Take your needle and thread and sew on your feather piece about one inch away from your visible seem with the pointed part of your feather piece closest to the seem.
Now take your very long tail you have left and wrap it around the seem to hide it. Wrap it tight enough that it gathers a little bit, but loose enough that it doesn't crush your feather piece. Knot the end of the tail at the back of the headband. It's easiest to do this by threading it through the tapestry needle and using that to help you knot it.
And congrats! You have a wonderful and very fashionable headband! Email me at SansLimitesCrochet@gmail.com with any questions and happy stitching!!!
This is just so beautiful & classy. I wish I would be enough brave to wear something like this... I love your works :)
