The Knit Cap

As far as knitting patterns go, this is as basic as they come, but it still remains one of my favorites. A complete classic knit hat - perfect for the beginning knitter! Enjoy!

Supplies:
1 Skein worsted weight yarn
size 10 16" Circular Knitting Needles
Tapestry Needle or Crochet hook
stitch marker (optional... if you need help keeping track of the rows!)

Cast on 56. Join in a circle taking care not to twist the stitches to begin knitting in the round.

Row 1: Knit 2, Purl 2 all the way around.
Row 2-12: Repeat Row 1.
Row 13: Knit.
Repeat Row 13 until hat measures 8 inches from bottom of ribbing to needle.

Begin the decrease rows.
Decrease Row 1: *K2tog. Knit 12. Repeat from * 3 more times.
Decrease Row 2: *K2tog. Knit 11. Repeat from * 3 more times.
Decrease Row 3: *K2tog. Knit 10. Repeat from * 3 more times.
Decrease Row 4: *K2tog. Knit 9. Repeat from * 3 more times.
Decrease Row 5: *K2tog. Knit 8. Repeat from * 3 more times.
Decrease Row 6: *K2tog. Knit 7. Repeat from * 3 more times.
Decrease Row 7: *K2tog. Knit 6. Repeat from * 3 more times.
Decrease Row 8: *K2tog. Knit 5. Repeat from * 3 more times.

Cut a long tail. Bind off by threading the tail through remaining stitches using a tapestry needle or crochet hook and knot off. Weave in the ends, and you've got a totally awesome hat!

This hat is so plain that I like to add a flower, a pin, a feather, or at the very least a pom on top! Have fun with it!

And here is a version of this hat with a massive crochet flower attached... stay reading... I'll try and make the flower the next FREE PATTERN! YAY!
