Summers are too short...

Hi all!

Wow what a whirlwind the last month has been!  Since finishing my textiles class, I put crochet borders on a ton of shorts, and dresses, and skirts... and even did a DIY with leggings that turned out pretty cute that I hope to share with you ASAP.  I also completely cleaned out my closet, and painted the basement and rearranged all my furniture to create a dance/workout space and a workspace for crocheting and working with fabric for my graduate thesis project.

THEN... I took an epic roadtrip to see the new baby in the family and hit up 6 national parks and 2 Navajo parks along the way, but I did ALL the driving and my legs are still cramping a bit.  My favorite travel pictures are included below...

Now I'm working on a couple new patterns I want to get out to you AND getting ready for school to start again.  This year is going to be CRAZY.  I'm taking a full load of graduate classes and trying to resist the urge to add one more (there is just too much cool stuff to learn).  Also, super pumped to TA the Product Development class I took in the Spring and loved so much.  I'm also planning out some dance classes I'll be teaching, and choreography I'm working on for the Nutcracker, and dancer competition season.  ALSO... if you live in or around Northern Colorado, come take crochet class from me!!!  I'm teaching at My Sister Knits starting in October... lots of fun projects I'm getting started on for that.  AND working on my thesis when I have the time cause that should be pretty awesome...  and by now I'm getting a little worried that I won't have enough time to work on Sans Limites Crochet patterns...  so they may come slowly... but hopefully they'll be better quality.

How has YOUR summer been going?  What are you guys working on?  Are you excited for Fall?

Home Again, Home Again!!!

Hello all!

Hope you had a lovely week! In the last 11 days, I have spent 6 of them driving, 2 at Renegade, and 1 Christmas shopping when the highway was closed! I have done no crocheting... needless to say, I'm wound a little tightly.

Finally made it back to Fort Collins not even 3 hours ago, then left immediately after that to grab my sister from the airport... who almost got stuck in Chicago until SUNDAY because her flight was canceled. Holy moly, are we glad she hopped on a different one and is here... just in time for the world to END! (At least we'll all be together, haha!)

Now I need to start Christmas shopping/making, do lots and lots of laundry, answer all your Etsy messages, ship some presents and orders and stuff, make some custom orders from Renegade, get my life organized, work on the DIY's I promised you, find a Christmas tree... I don't even know why I'm still sitting here writing this with so much on my to do list...

But for now... a hot bath so my feet will be warm for the first time in 11 days... that was one cold road trip! More fun stuff to come tomorrow!

Clothing Challenge COMPLETE!!!!

Today is my birthday!  That means this clothing addict over here has made it 6 whole months without buying a single piece of NEW clothing!  ... And only a few pieces used and second hand, cause it's fun!  I've found some absolutely amazing things for not much money, and the money I do spend has been going to a great cause like Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Epilepsy Research!  I feel so happy and accomplished!

I think I might buy a few new things this month (like a racerback white tank top... those are really hard to find second hand in good condition and mine has a hole in it... boo)...  but then I might try and go another 6 months...  we'll see!

Has anyone else been trying this clothing challenge?  How's it been going?  Do you feel as awesome as I do when you buy an designer dress second hand?

This "I Love Otters" sweatshirt from the Monterey Aquarium was the last NEW piece of clothing I bought... all the way back in the beginning of June!

Instead, I sooth my need to shop with cool pieces like this from the thrift store... all this under $20 and all that money goes to Goodwill!

Insta-SLC

This was an overactive week for SansLimitesCrochet on Instagram...  Lots of holiday parade photos (this year's Parade of Lights and Macy's 2004)... lots of Krochet Kids photos (I hope you voted for them to win a million - if not, it's OK, just go buy a hat instead!) ...  and a pic from a Ugandan orphanage for World AIDS day...   oh yeah... and of course, some really cool stitching DIY projects.

Hope you have a lovely week!  Hopefully a new pattern coming out today... just working on taking some PHOTOS!  (PS  In the works with One O.A.K.  Photography for some really fun pictures that are more than just out by our front door...  get excited!)

Leaving early next week to head out to San Fran for Renegade!  (read up -------------->)
Blog posts may be sparse, so be sure to follow SansLimitesCrochet on Instagram or Tumblr for road trip, craft fair, and stitching photos!

#letsdothis

OK OK OK!!!  Voting starts today!  You have the power to cast a vote and help Krochet Kids international win ONE MILLION FREAKIN DOLLARS to continue their work empowering women in Uganda, Peru, and who knows where next (hint hint... HERE) to rise above poverty!

#LETSDOTHIS

(The wood paneling behind Kohl was hand stained by my fellow freakin awesome interns, the hat Kohl is wearing was made by Lucy... my inspiration while I was there - she makes the best hats, I did a lot of quality control checking... and the cycle of change painted on the wall was done by my favorite Aussie -Leah... I helped hold the ladder and tried not to freak out about her falling... I worry... I can't help it...)

So it is time friends!  Vote at http://bit.ly/vote4kki.

And watch the American Giving Awards which of course is happening on my lady (and fellow intern) Liz's birthday (Dec 8) and one year and one day after we heard we were picked to work at this awesome place.

So crafters unite!  Help some amazing women on the other side of the world by helping this organization...  #letsdothis   !!!!!!!!!!

Hey!  The first of some of the designs I did for KKi are starting to come out!  (So exciting for me to see them made by someone other than me!)  I was super pumped to learn about KKi's release of kids hats... so jumped on the Etsy owl trend...  Check it out!

And buy your little a hat and help a woman in Uganda all at the same time.  (Cyber Monday pals... it's coming!!!)

Happy Monday

I went to bed last night kind of dreading all I had to do this week, and then became supremely cranky when I woke up early to register for classes and a California sales tax license... ick.

But then I put some pumpkin eggnog in my coffee and saw this.  The whole day is instantly brighter.  Enjoy this before you get to any stitching this week!

Love,
Sara

TED

Anyone else obsessed with TED talks?  I had listened to a few, but got really hooked while living in California with the amazing Liz Jones.  Such awesome talks for people who love to learn about a variety of things.  Liz knows about my Clothing Challenge and sent me this one...  IT IS SO PERFECT!

So, watch it and learn!  And thanks so much for sharing Liz!

AAAAAND...  yes, patterns and DIY's have slowed down a ton... bummer, I know.  BUT,   I have been applying for lots of things lately and already heard back...  going to be in the French Nest Open Air Market on Oct 20, and possibly selling my stuff in the downtown boutique Kansas City Kitty in January.  YIKES, there is a lot to do!

Everything Flowers

I have a new favorite book that I found at the San Francisco Folk Art and Craft Museum.

It's called Everything Flowers and includes the artwork of Clare Rojas.

I'm head over heals in love with her use of color and shape! I bet it's a book you would like too!

My other life...

For those that don't know... when I'm not stitching, I'm probably dancing. That's what my college degree is in after all. West African dance is what took me to Africa for the first time where I saw poverty and expanded my world view and changed as a person... dance is a spectacular thing... and this is one darn good video... Thanks Callie, for posting!

A Clothing Challenge

I have a lot of clothes... almost an embarrassing amount. I just LOOOOVE them. Shopping and outfit planning make me happy, and clothes are often what I bring home as my souvenirs from my travels. I really love my clothes.

So then I read this article from Apartment Therapy. So what really does happen to your clothes when you donate them? Not as much of what you donate ends up with the less fortunate as you would think... and a lot of it ends up in Africa. I know because I have a very clear memory of shopping for kind of hideous neon shorts at the market place in Iganga as a joke/bonding experience. And all our clothes ending up there... is not particularly a good thing for the African economy...

So then I read this article from Fashionista a couple days ago... and I really got to thinking...

For the last 5 months in California, if we wanted to shop, we went to the Salvation Army's sale... because when you're an unpaid intern, you don't have a very high shopping budget... ok, you don't have ANY shopping budget. The clothes I found for a dollar were often just as cool and far more unique than anything I could find at the shopping mall... not to mention cheaper and more eco-friendly!

So here's the deal... my birthday is exactly 5 months from today. I made it 5 months in Cali without too much shopping... so I can do it again, right? Here's the challenge... any clothing that comes into my closet in the next 5 months will either be from a thrift store or handmade by a local artist. And if it comes into my closet, I better plan on keeping it there for a very, very, very long time. And if I make it 5 months... maybe I'll make this a forever thing... who knows?

Anyone else willing to take on this challenge with me?

Guilt free shopping, eco-friendly, helping the world a little, saving money, forcing you to get a bit creative? Sounds like a win - win - win situation to me!

Amazing Ladies

Krochet Kids is a truly amazing company that is changing the world... and there is a truly amazing group of ladies that keep it running. On this blog, I've made a couple posts about how awesome the women in Uganda and Peru are and you can read about them HERE. But right now I'm talking about a different group of ladies who you can't read about on the KKi website... the interns. They are truly the most amazing ladies I have had the pleasure to come across and you can read about them right now.

It takes a very special (and maybe slightly crazy) group of people to give up their lives for 5 months, move somewhere they've never been before, into a tiny apartment with 8 other strangers, and work their butts off all day, everyday... without getting paid. I was a bit nervous to meet them... but there was nothing to worry about. Only amazing people do stuff like that, and this group of ladies is beyond amazing.

The Care Bears: Katie, Jess, and Camille.
This awesome group of women spent their days packaging every order that came through the warehouse, managing returns, counting thousands and thousands of hats, and took on any other random job that came their way (like building a massive shelf system, painting the warehouse, and staining a ton of wood). When it came time for the gala, these women called restaurants, wineries, breweries, furniture rental places... you name it to get the stuff we needed. For two whole days leading up to the gala, they spent all their time in the burning hot kitchen cooking up some of the most delicious and beautiful food I've ever seen made before my eyes. They are a truly awesome group of women, and I can't wait to see what they go on to do in this world.

The Events Team: Meghan, Kate, and Alex.
Everyday, I was amazed by how on top of life these three ladies always seemed to be. While they were here, they packed the events schedule, traveled over 7,000 miles, through 8 states, drove through the night many a time, slept on the floors of strangers, met a tone of crazy (but awesome) people, answered tons of emails, packed, unpacked and repacked the Durango, and raised tens of thousands of dollars for Krochet Kids international. Words can not describe how hard they rocked it. And we all send our best to Alex who left yesterday to spend 2 years in China as a Peace Corps volunteer! WOOH!

(Photos from Meghan and 31 Bits!)

The Lone Wolves: Liz, Leah, (and me).

Liz was our Social Media intern. Everyday she updated facebook, twitter, the intern blog, the KKi website, answered a zillion emails, and did so many other random but totally needed things when it came to social media that I can't even begin to list them all. She also helped paint the warehouse, stain wood, frantically fill a Nordstrom order, and generally just completely rocked at her job. Not to mention keeping us all positive, and saying just the right things at all the right times. We would have been lost without our Liz!

Leah came all the way from Australia to work with us! Beyond working so hard for free, she paid a ton to get here! Leah helped make things for the trade show, set everything up for photo shoots and planned the overall look for our gala. While the KKi staff was off at all the Washington galas, Leah was in the warehouse every day (we're talking Sundays too, guys) building walls and painting walls. It was downright impressive all she got done. Beyond that, Leah is an old soul and young at heart all at the same time. She is wise beyond her years and the first person to go to for advise, but also the first to jump in the ocean with all her clothes on. Truly an amazing woman.

So there it is... an ode to these amazing women! Thanks for all the laughs and for being there for me through all the sweat and tears (and the little bit of blood from those bowtie cases)!

Home Sweet Home

Hey all!

It has been forever since my last post! Amazing how life can get away from you sometimes! BUT... there is still a lot going on over here at Sans Limites Crochet!

First.... Sans Limites Crochet is on Instagram! I love photo sharing, and am really excited about it! You can follow me for lots of fun crochet photos to come! For now... enjoy these photos below from my road trip home!

Second... I'm unpacking my yarn today and getting ready to get to work! I'm packed full of ideas and have some fun things made already that I can't wait to get onto paper for you to try! (Hello, tapestry crochet duffel bag I love so much!)

Third... fair warning that new work may be coming a bit slowly... Drove into town yesterday to find my home covered in smoke from the High Park Fire and only one week left before the little sis moves away to Boston for SIX WHOLE YEARS to pursue her PhD at Harvard! Needless to say... I've been a bit emotional. It's hard to leave home for a few months and come back to so much change!

Plus there are a couple months of blogs I need to get caught up on! I'm back and blogging, so stay tuned!

Love, Sara
